MAGA AND THE MANOSPHERE
In the past year, conversations about the manosphere have exploded into the mainstream, beginning with 2025's acclaimed drama Adolescence (now Emmy and Golden Globe winning) and most recently with Louis Theroux's new documentary Inside the Manosphere.
Both produced by Netflix, so kudos to them for that.
These series have brought public discourses about toxic masculinity out of the shadows and thrusted it into the ears of many who previously didn't care, didn't understand, or just didn't want to pay attention. Because like it or not, the manosphere is not just problematic, it's unavoidable, and if we don't start having more open conversations about it, then our kids will be exposed to all the bad stuff without the context or the ability to process what it really means.
This is why the manosphere has always thrived in the shadows - within reach of the vulnerable, but discreet enough to go unnoticed by anybody not looking for it.
Like a cult, the simplicity of its messaging creates the illusion of honest clarity, of people speaking a truth that is frowned upon and, crucially, not accepted by wider society. To the young, the vulnerable, and those in need of validation and acceptance, the manosphere offers an honest, safe space where you can speak before thinking, act without consequence, and not only be welcomed, but celebrated for doing so.
The manosphere is not just an echo chamber. It is a rage room with an unlocked door, and when the actions of those within it go unchecked, it creates a misappropriated sense of power, self-importance, and superiority that spills out with damaging and, at times, tragic consequences.
Our big story this week is Donald Trump. Specifically, as the nonsensical War in Iran rages on and the President becomes increasingly erratic, we discuss if he is actually fit to stay in office, and what would or could happen if not.
Also in the news:
A Christopher Columbus statue is erected near the White House,
Bill Cosby ordered to pay $59 million in damages, and
A Florida woman refuses to leave hospital five months after being discharged.
Our guest co-host this week is Ira Chaleff, author of To Stop a Tyrant: The Power of Political Followers, which is available to buy now. He is co-author of the original handbook given to every newly elected member of the US Congress and is Chair Emeritus of the non-partisan Congressional Management Foundation.
