ARTEMIS II: A GENERATIONAL MOMENT

I've always had a fascination with space stuff. Though, as you can tell from my use of the term 'space stuff', I'm hardly an expert so much as a curious observer who thinks it's all pretty cool.

You'll therefore not be surprised to learn how excited I am to watch NASA's live stream of the Artemis II launch later tonight, which is currently scheduled for 11.24pm UK time.

If you haven't already, listen to our episode Was the Moon Landing a Hoax? where I discussed all the conspiracy theories surrounding the 1969 landing and why some people still think it's a big lie. Spoiler alert: it's not.

I actually find it super disheartening when people are so quick to discredit the achievement of landing on the moon, because to do so is not just to deny what America is capable of, but what humanity is capable of.

Our big story this week is NASA and the launch of Artemis II, because for all the people who turned out on the Space Coast of Florida to watch the historic mission lift off, there are just as many people wondering… what’s the point?

So we discuss what it really means, the political consequences, and why now.

Also in the news:

  • Trump has signed an executive order to create a national voter list which, if allowed to pass, will impose serious restrictions on mail-in ballots,

  • The President also took over US airwaves last night for an address to the nation, and

  • Construction of the White House ballroom grinds to a halt after a judge ordered it must get congressional approval.

Our guest co-host this week is friend of the show Emma Long, Associate Professor in American History and Politics at the University of East Anglia.
